Tulsa’s Mat Maxwell’s Rise To Fame As Luke Combs’ Bass Player

Mat Maxwell, bass player for Luke Combs, is a fan of Beavers Bend State Park and Broken Bow Lake. He’s played the area several times and stayed at Mountain Vista Cabin. Mat was featured in my book with Bob Burke, “Explosion of Prosperity, A History of Broken Bow Lake, Beavers Bend State Park and Hochatown.”

The Tulsa resident has toured with Corey Kent, The Swon Brothers, Lauren Alaina and others. He joined Luke Combs in 2021 and shared the journey that led him from Tishomingo, OK to sold-out arenas around the world.

The Early Days

“I came to music late compared to most. I started around 17 in my buddy’s garage band in Tishomingo. No idea what I was doing and musically very ignorant. I graduated high school and then went to junior college, studying commercial music and audio technology. Music theory, ear training and other music-related courses helped a lot. I worked pretty hard during that phase of my life, trying to make up for lost time. From there, moved to Tulsa and played in many different bands. Casinos, dance bands, weddings, churches, jazz gigs and local theatre. I also took private lessons on bass and piano. Piano helped immensely and I’d recommend it to everyone. I kept gigging and doing just about everything imaginable, saying yes and learning new skills and genres along the way. Larger artists continued to hire me over the years, and I eventually landed the gig I have now. I’m 35 and have been playing professionally for about 14 years.”

Landing The Gig with Luke Combs-Life On The Road

“I didn’t have a history with Luke prior to about eight months ago. I met his bandleader about 14 years ago and was in his band then. He remembered me, believed in me, and recommended me. I went in, did my best, and the rest is history. Always do your best and leave a good impression on people. You never know when it’ll pay off. The travel is fun. New people, places, food, planes, buses, hotel rooms and Uber. Keeps you on your toes. I usually try to get some practicing in before the show and stretch. If I can, I’ll go for a run earlier in the day. We visited Fenway while in Boston and getting to do fun things like that is great while on tour. You don’t always get a chance to take in the cities, but it’s nice when you can.

Some days are busier than others. A lot of the time you don’t get a chance to fully enjoy where you are. The main reason you’re there is to work and that has to come first. It’s incredible. Absolutely incredible. The boss, band, and crew are all awesome and hilarious, so that makes touring really enjoyable. Super talented and professional folks bringing a great show. It’s a beautiful thing. It’s different than what a much younger me would’ve expected, but I’ve been doing it long enough that I knew some of the “ropes” of touring beforehand. It’s definitely a fun job, but a job nonetheless and it does take you away from home and family. Wouldn’t trade it for nothin’ but everything in life has trade-offs. I’m very, very thankful.”

Advice for Aspiring Musicians

“Contacts are essential. Strong ones. Ones where the person not only knows you but believes in you. It takes time and you don’t always make a lot of money. Especially in the beginning. Stay humble, be kind, show up on time, say yes, do what you say you’ll do, and always hit home runs (musically speaking). They’ll remember you. It’s typically a marathon, not a sprint, from what I’ve seen and personally experienced.”

Onstage Past and Present

“Early on in my career we were paid to quit playing because a high school reunion came in the bar and wanted to hear Bon Jovi all night. We were an original Americana band! Once…the drummer in our cover band fell asleep during a slow song. He had drank too much and leaned on his snare. People sometimes throw hats or their phones on stage at Luke’s shows. I’ll put the hat on and throw it back a few songs later. That’s fun. During the show I can’t do anything besides hand a phone back between songs.”
Maxwell says he spent a lot of time learning Combs’ setlist and much of his catalogue prior to joining the band.

“Any musician that has done a fair bit of touring can tell you fun and interesting stories about places they’ve been. Some of those are more memorable than others, and Broken Bow is one of those for me. It’s obviously a place known for aestheticism, but the local artisans and overall art and music culture is part of what makes it so special. It was my dad’s favorite place on earth, and it definitely makes that same list for me.”
Maxwell’s rise to the top has catapulted him from playing shows in Broken Bow, OK to sold out concerts at Madison Square Garden with Luke Combs.
Mat Maxwell is another great Oklahoma musician we should treasure as he follows the beat of his dreams.

Corps of Engineers Beavers Bend Water Release Statement

I contacted the Corps of Engineers about their generating policies on Mountain Fork River. I wanted to know why they generate on weekends. Generating impacts tourists and float businesses in Beavers Bend.  Their timely response is below.

Check the links below before planning a float trip on Mountain Fork River.

Thank you for reaching out to us.

In most cases, the water manager provides a minimum and maximum release a week in advance, and SWPA plans their releases 2-3 days in advance based on power demands. SWPA may change releases on the day-of, if power demand shifts or if another project needs to be shut down and cannot produce hydropower. Also, we may alter releases day-of if there is downstream flooding.

Typically power demand on weekends is low, which is why there aren’t releases as often during weekends. When releases are done during weekends, particularly on holiday weekends, it is usually because Broken Bow is flooded. This can be checked on our website (http://www.swt-wc.usace.army.mil/lowerred.basinpie.fp.html). If the project is in the flood pool, particularly if it’s over 5% and rain is expected the following week, we have to make releases for public safety.

One thing that confuses people is that we aren’t allowed to make “pre-releases,” meaning I can’t drop Broken Bow ahead of time because there is rain in the forecast. If I were to release ahead of time and then the rain fell slightly downstream I could contribute to flooding there. Another confusing thing is that sometimes we will have releases shut down while it’s raining and the pool is in flood stage. Typically that’s because projects downstream are flooding and we don’t want to contribute to further damage/danger there so we wait to release until downstream is done flooding.

Another reason we might make weekend releases is if there is a Swift Water Rescue Training or other special ops (like last weekend). These aren’t typically done on holiday weekends, but we do work with the firefighters’ schedule. Public safety, including preventing drowning, typically takes priority over canoeing or other recreational activity requiring low flow.

SWPA’s hydro schedule for weekends come out Friday and that they are tentative and subject to change due to power demands or changing flood risk conditions.

We understand that businesses and livelihoods are affected by releases, so please know that SWPA and the water manager do try to plan around busy days, but also keep in mind that Broken Bow was created for 1) flood control, 2) hydropower 3) water supply, as well as recreation and wildlife, so those first 3 purposes must be balanced, and may at any given point take priority.

Please feel free to reach back out to us if you have any further questions.

Oklahoma Hall of Famer & Legendary Broken Bow Native Bob Burke

I enjoyed catching up with legendary author, attorney and Broken Bow native, Bob Burke over lunch recently. Bob has written more historical and non-fiction books than anyone in history. His stellar career includes being an ABC football broadcaster, respected historian and induction in the Oklahoma Hall of Fame.

Bob would call our Broken Bow high school games in the 1980’s, then be on TV doing an ABC football broadcast the next day. The Broken Bow boy that grew up next to my grandparents, has made a huge impact in Oklahoma.

Bob is elated about the tourism boom in Broken Bow and co-wrote a historical Broken Bow book.

“Uncle Johnny Beavers would not believe his eyes if he could see the booming tourism in and around what once was his farm along the Mountain Fork River. From his vantage point in the “bend” in the river, Uncle Johnny surely thought God had carved out this magnificent vista just for him. However, he was a man who shared his bounty with his neighbors. He was a legendary hunter who frequently gave his dressed game to fishermen drifting down the sparkling water of the Mountain Fork.
If visitors came by around meal time, Uncle Johnny invited them into the house where his wife, Aunt Levina, always had three or four different fresh meats cooked up or hanging in the smokehouse.

I predict that if any of the millions of visitors to our beloved Beavers Bend and Hochatown run across Uncle Johnny in Heaven, he will stick out his chest and say, “See what I preserved for you. I was glad to share it with you!”

-Bob Burke

Broken Bow To Oklahoma Hall of Fame

“Bob Burke is one of the hardest workers I know. Must have been a work ethic he picked up as a child…no one loves Oklahoma more than he.”

-Mick Cornett, Former Oklahoma City Mayor

Bob Burke, an Oklahoma legend. His kindness, tremendous heart and great contributions will always be cherished by those that love the Sooner State.

Taking The Talimena Drive

Taking the Talimena Drive from Beavers Bend in late October and November offers spectacular views that are unmatched in Oklahoma.

Sherri and I took the drive yesterday as we as we traveled to Norman from our Mountain Vista cabin in Beavers Bend State Park. It is an easy drive for those going back to the Oklahoma City area from Broken Bow. If you take the the scenic route, it adds about an hour to the trip from Oklahoma City to Broken Bow. it is well worth it.

Driving north from Broken Bow through Poteau and Sallisaw offers a kaleidoscope of beautiful colors during the fall. The highway twists and turns feature magnificent views of the Ouachita National Forest. Oklahoma City visitors making the trip from Broken Bow will have easy access to I-40 and be homeward bound when entering Sallisaw, OK.

The US Forestry Service has a nice visitor center just south of Heavener, OK. It is well-equipped with information and history lessons that will be helpful when taking the 90-minute Talimena Drive from Beavers Bend State Park.

Taking the Talimena Drive is a great experience. The fall foliage in Southeastern Oklahoma will be at peak levels in about two weeks. We took our trip a little early to see the peak foliage but will do it again later this month.

There are areas along the highway to stop and take pictures of the this scenic region.  Restaurants and gas stations are scarce until you reach Heavener, OK. Fill up with gas before your trip and be prepared for a memorable journey! Cedar Creek Golf Course In Broken Bow, OK

Cedar Creek Golf Course, Broken Bow

“I’ve heard great things about Cedar Creek Golf Course in Broken Bow, OK but never played it.” I hear this often from tourists who plan to visit Beavers Bend State Park and Broken Bow Lake.

The course is not simply nice…it’s phenomenal. I’ve been on the best courses in Dallas, Tulsa and Oklahoma City. None have the scenic views of this pristine trail. If this were a private course in a metropolitan area, it would be very expensive.

IMG_1187

Nestled at the end of a beautiful, winding road a few miles north of Beavers Bend State Park and Broken Bow Lake, this Southeastern Oklahoma gem will steal your heart and become your new favorite course.

I visited with course superintendent, Kurt Adams, about a week ago while visiting our vacation home, Mountain Vista Cabin in Beavers Bend. I enjoyed meeting him…great guy and he really cares about the visitor experience at Cedar Creek.

He keeps the pro shop in great shape and the course looked magnificent. Narrow fairways, towering pines and finely tuned greens make Cedar Creek Golf Course in Broken Bow, OK a popular attraction for locals and tourists.

Cedar Creek Golf Course

Our cabin guests have enjoyed many rounds on the course for years. The great thing about Cedar Creek is it’s very inexpensive to play.

Broken Bow Lake Fishing Guide

Broken Bow Lake Fishing Guides

Searching for a Broken Bow Lake fishing guide? They are highly sought after near Beavers Bend State Park. I recently had the great experience of spending several hours on the lake with Bryce Archey of BrokenBowLakeGuide.com. I now understand why he has been lauded as the best in Southeastern Oklahoma for many years.

Bryce, a graduate of Southeastern Oklahoma State University, is a charismatic bass fishing expert. As we hit the lake in his decked out boat, the learning, laughter and good times began immediately. We scorched across Broken Bow Lake and hit the first fishing spot around 7:00 a.m. Bryce knew exactly where the bass would be schooling and the lures and presentation to use in order to get them to visit the friendly confines of his livewell tank.

.Broken Bow Lake Fishing Guide

My buddy along for the trip landed a nice bass on his first cast! Bryce knows Broken Bow Lake like the back of his hand and provided excellent education regarding how wind, weather and lake levels impact having a successful venture on the water.

“I get tremendous satisfaction from teaching people how to catch fish on Broken Bow Lake,” Bryce said. He has fished Southeastern Oklahoma his entire life and considers Broken Bow Lake to be the top lake for anglers in our area.

Broken Bow Lake Fishing Guide

Bryce paid his dues along the way in his quest to become the premier fishing guide in the Beavers Bend State Park area. “I used to fish nearly all night, park the boat in a cove and catch a few hours sleep, then hit the lake again at daybreak,” he recalled.

When you visit Beavers Bend State Park and the Broken Bow Lake area, hire an expert if you truly want to catch fish, have lots of laughs, and learn about bass fishing. I grew up on Broken Bow Lake but have not had the opportunity to bass fish in several years. One outing with him and I was hooked…So were several nice fish! We had such a tremendous experience that we booked him for second outing.

Broken Bow Lake Fishing Guide

We caught over 30 and kept 17 nice bass. Bryce will fillet the fish for you at the end of the outing and trust me, lunch was amazing! Contact Bryce Archey at 870-582-4561. He has gift certificates available and accepts credit cards. He also provides fishing equipment.

If you have always thought about hiring a Broken Bow Lake fishing guide, I highly recommend Bryce Archey. His kindness and professionalism are top notch and I promise you it will be fun!

He is in high demand and everyone has spoken highly of him for years…except the fish in Broken Bow Lake!

If we can help arrange a Mountain Vista luxury cabin stay and fishing trip with Bryce for you, contact us at BeaversBendVacations.com or 405-535-8055.
